Assistant Trainer - Mike Marshall
WE ARE fortunate to have the experience and diligence of Mike in the key
role of assistant trainer to Henry. Mike grew up in a racing environment
with his father Ginger a long-term employee at John Dunlop’s stables in
Sussex. Mike started riding out there as a 12-year-old and his mind was soon
made up that his future lay within the sport of kings. He was apprenticed to
Ian Balding, riding 30 winners, including a notable double at Sandown on the
day which Mtoto landed the Eclipse (1988). He went on to spend six years as
a work-rider at Major Dick Hern’s West Ilsley Stables. There he was
fortunate enough to ride the likes of 1000 Guineas winner Harayir and also
the top-class Alhaarth. That led to an opportunity to work the winters in
Dubai for Sheikh Hamdan. In 1999 Mike joined Godolphin. At the outset this
was a predominantly work-riding role, but Mike progressed to a Head Man’s
position. He joined the Warren Place team in September 2007.
